Device Discovery

Device Discovery allows for auto-population and enrichment of Device Catalog. Through Auto-Discovery, basic device information is obtained; such as IP Address and DNS Name. Through Discovery, detailed information can be collected such as Device Type and Serial Number.

Auto-Discovery

Auto-Discovery is the process of discovering a large group of devices using limited information. Monolith accomplishes this functionality by way of Ping Scans (up to a Class A and with wildcarding), Manual Scans (a list of possible devices), LDAP Scan (Using Active Directory to grab all registered servers and workstations), and CDP Hop Scan (a list of seed devices limited to hop level). Once devices are found and verified they are able to be discovered for additional information.

Discovery

Discovery is the process of discovering specific information about a specific device. Monolith accomplishes this functionality by way of SNMP and WMI. The following information is available for Monolith Discovery.

1. Device Type (from SNMP System SysoID or WMI Win32_OperatingSystem)
2. System Name, Location, and Contact (from SNMP System Table or WMI Win32_ComputerSystem)
3. Vendor (from SNMP System SysOID or WMI Win32_ComputerSystem)
4. Serial Number (from SNMP Tables or WMI Win32_OperatingSystem)
5. Description (from SNMP System Table or WMI Win32_OperatingSystem)

Exclusions

Exclusions allow customers to make broad discovery policies, but eliminate things such as DHCP scopes and printers

Rules

Each discovery component allows the use of rules logic so that a higher level of automation can be achieved. For example, using Perl-based rulesets, you can automatically add meta tags to devices and/or automatically group devices into specific device groups. Device Groups are how user interfaces are displays, so maintenance time reduces. Meta Tags are used by other modules for enabling polling and enrichment, so again maintenance time is reduced. All rules are intended for ease of overall solution maintenance and are not required to be used, but highly encouraged.
